The Roman Ruins at Salona

We went to the Roman ruins of Salona today. This was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia (Croatia) and is located in modern day Split. It’s a huge site and even contains the remains of an amphitheater. The infamous Emporer Diocletian was thought to have come from Salona and in his later days he built his retirement palace nearby on the water. Not surprisingly, a lot of Christians were persecuted here in the amphitheater. There are sarcophagi of the martyrs scattered all around the site.
